We were looking for a Mexican restaurant to have lunch at a while ago, and came across La Salsa, which was located far up in Dempsey Hill. We got to Dempsey Hill by public transport (train + bus), although there was also the option of hopping onto a free shuttle bus (schedule).
It was quite easy to find La Salsa, as the restaurants in Dempsey Hill were all housed in low-rise, 1-storey buildings. There was a small stage in the middle of the restaurant for the band that would be playing in the evening. Unfortunately, as we were there for lunch, we did not get to enjoy live music.
We ordered a total of 6 dishes for the 5 of us to share; 1 ground beef chimichanga, 1 charcoal grilled pork taco, and 2 each of chicken quesadilla & the restaurant’s special La Salsa quesadilla (stuffed with pork & pineapple). All the dishes came with dollops of yummy guacamole & salsa, just how I like it!
The ground beef chimichanga was served first, and it looked like a huge puff pastry at first glance. The deep fried tortilla skin was crispy and there was even cheese stuffed together with the ground beef. Overall, it tasted pretty good as well.
Both the quesadillas tasted exactly how I hoped they would turn out. The toasted tortilla wraps were done just right, and the melted cheese paired very nicely with the grilled meat fillings. I preferred the more savoury pork & pineapple (“La Salsa”) quesadilla over the grilled chicken one, although that was rather good as well.
The charcoal grilled pork taco looked rather healthy when it was served. Just look at the amount of shredded vegetables that were bursting out of the hard taco shells below! I thought that the taco shells could have been slightly crunchier though, and they were perhaps taken out of the toaster too soon. The charcoal grilled pork fillings were really yummy though, and came in small chunks that were very tender.
The dishes that we ordered were tasty and quite filling, despite the portions looking rather small. The food was quite reasonably priced as well, given that Mexican food in Singapore is still pretty much of a rarity. Other than the fact that the restaurant was located in Dempsey Hill, which I consider a rather inconvenient place to get to (given that there’s no direct train/bus there), I would definitely return whenever I have a craving for Mexican food.
