A huge 4-4.5-star hotel linked directly to MBK mall and the National Stadium BTS, the Pathumwan Princess offers guests easy access to both shopping & commuting around Bangkok.
The main lobby on the ground floor was huge, and housed a restaurant, a bar/lounge, as well as some tour agencies. I did not really like the counters where the tour agents were at though, as they kept touting everytime I walked past.
Check-in was a breeze, and the agent even offered us some cooling lemongrass-infused welcome drinks in cute little test tubes, while we waited for the process to be completed. Luggages were sent up to our room, and arrived before we even did, which was a nice bonus.
Standard King Room
We booked a standard twin room for 2 nights (S$426, but I used the Entertainer app, so only paid for 1 night at S$213), and it was a comfortable stay over both nights. The room was spacious and well stocked with toiletries, and the bed was soft yet firm, which was great! If you noticed that the picture is of a King Room, it was because the hotel overbooked on Twin Rooms, and hence gave us a King Room instead, with a complimentary extra bed (normally available for an extra fee).
Some of the in-room amenities were:
- Minibar (pay for use)
- Kettle (tea & coffee)
- In-room slippers (decent quality)
- Bottled water
- Free Wifi (each guest can connect up to 2 devices)
The ensuite bathroom looked nice and featured a bathtub with a removable shower head. Unfortunately the partition between the tub and the main area was not a full one, and it was a challenge trying not to flood the toilet floor while bathing!
Similar to the Novotel Ploenchit, this hotel also had an open-concept bathroom. We also kept the motorised blinds drawn throughout, but I wonder who designs these bathrooms..
A huge space is dedicated for guests to work out in, with an assortment of weights machines, cardio machines, free weights, and so on. Personal trainers could also be hired for a fee, and we saw quite a few guests undergoing sessions while we were there.
There was also a studio where guests can sign up for classes such as yoga, aerobics, etc. In addition to all the above, there were also squash courts and tennis courts, which unfortunately we did not have the time to check out.
The swimming pool is also located on the 8th floor, and is open from 6am-10.30pm daily. There was a dedicated lane marked out in the pool for serious swimmers, which I thought was quite good. I would have liked the pool to open till later though, as I always came back too late to get to use it.
The breakfast buffet was served at the CiTi BiSTRo restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel, and had quite a large seating area for guests. Please do not ask me why the restaurant’s name was spelled like this, I found it a joke as well hahah.
Breakfast starts at 6am and runs till 10.30am, giving both early and late-risers ample time to eat! It does get pretty crowded around 8.30-9.30am though, so try to avoid that timing, unless you don’t mind standing in the queue for a seat.
The breakfast options were adequate, and the food tasted okay but not particularly impressive. The waffles and hotcakes were soggy and even MacDonald’s would have tasted better. The fried dough fritters (you tiao) and soy milk was also bland and uninspired. The noodles also tasted worse than they looked! I ordered a cappuccino on both days, and both times it tasted rather bad.
Variety remained mostly the same over both days that we had breakfast there, which was disappointing. At least the live egg station was consistently good!
I had a good stay at the Pathumwan Princess, and the facilities here were excellent. For a huge hotel though, I would have expected the fitness centre to be open 24/7, and the pool till late, so that guests could still enjoy these facilities even after being out all day. Wifi was quite fast, although once you check out, they revoke your wifi access.. I have absolutely no complaints about the location of the hotel though, and the direct link to MBK shopping centre was great to have. The breakfast buffet was disappointing, so while I would consider staying here again, I probably would forego the breakfast option.
