The last time I was at Sunset Way, I was still a university student. How time flies. C had told me that she knew of this good Jap restaurant in Sunset Way, and so off we went one cloudy afternoon over the weekend.
There was no MRT station near Sunset Way though, with the nearest being Clementi MRT, but even that was only accessible by bus. Without a car of our own, we made our way there by bus of course.
Megumi restaurant was a short walk away from the bus stop, and could be found opposite a small supermarket (Grindelwald).
Surprisingly, it was rather empty when we entered the restaurant. The upside of a near-empty restaurant was that we got attended to very quickly, and were almost immediately shown to a table.
There was no physical menu presented to us, but an iPad was handed to us instead. After browsing through the variety of dishes that they had to offer, we finally decided on what to have, and placed our orders through the iPad.
Less than 10 minutes later, my sashimi bento set was served. I could get used to this speed of service. 😉 The sashimi slices were rather fresh, and definitely value-for-money considering how much fresh sashimi costs in Singapore. The maki sushis and assorted sushis were pretty tasty too, and even the salad tasted good.
I am not a huge fan of steamboats, or even sukiyaki, but I had to admit that the broth served here was really good. It was slightly salty, but also had that umami taste at the same time. The beef slices were also really tender when cooked, and one of the best that I had tasted so far. The set does not come with rice though, but it was still pretty filling, especially with the amount of vegetables in that pot!
We also ordered a king prawn to share, and it was hands-down the best I ever had. Grilled neatly to perfection, with a creamy and cheesy topping over the juicy prawn, it was just YUM!
Megumi offers a wide variety of fresh sashimi and fresh seafood air-flown from Japan. To say that it was cheap would be an over-exaggeration, but it was definitely value-for-money. Although the fresh seafood was a bit out of my budget this time round, based on the freshness of their sashimi, I believe that the seafood on offer would taste great as well. Would I return? Yes I would, as I do want to give their ramen and donburi a try as well! (:
They have another outlet along Upper East Coast Road, which would probably be more convenient for fellow Easties!
