Although we spent 2 days in Kyoto, we essentially only had one night in Kyoto city, as our flight out to Tokyo was departing early from Kansai International Airport, which was actually in Osaka! Being only in Kyoto for a night, it was important to find somewhere convenient and affordable, and Mitsui Garden Kyoto Shijo ticked both boxes. 🙂
Mitsui Garden Kyoto Shijo is part of the Mitsui Garden chain of hotels, and was a really good place to be based in Kyoto. It was conveniently situated about a 5-10min walk from the nearest station (Shijo), and it was also just off Shijo Road (Kyoto’s Orchard Road).
Double Room with Small Double Bed
We booked the most basic room there was (S$84) , but found that it was quite decently-sized, and actually rather comfortable. The slippers provided were of a decent quality, and not the flimsy kind that you normally find at 3-star hotels. There was even a work desk and an office chair for those traveling on business.
Some of the amenities provided in the room include:
- In-room slippers (pretty decent quality)
- Electric kettle
- Free Wifi
The ensuite restroom was rather cramped compared to the room, but at least the toilet seat had a bidet! 😀 The water pressure from the shower was also quite good, and I had no complaints about the heating.
The hotel had its own public bath, gender-separated of course. The public bath was very basic, and only had one main soaking pool. The water that was piped in was probably just heated water, and unlikely to have any medicinal properties, although it was definitely better than nothing! After a cold day out sightseeing, there was something therapeutic about having a good hot soak before turning in.
Do note that the hotel does not have a swimming pool or a gym, so if you are intending to swim laps or workout in the gym, I would suggest that you find another hotel instead. For me though, the public bath was a real bonus on a cold winter’s day! 🙂
I was quite lucky to have gotten this hotel at such a cheap price, especially considering that the hotel had its own bath house facility, and the rooms were comfortable and spacious. Although not situated directly next to the train station, I would say that the walk from the hotel to the station was a comfortable 5-10min walk. Passing by convenience stores and restaurants along the way also helped to make the walk feel a lot less tiring, so it was not too bad. I would definitely stay here again in Kyoto if the prices are this good!
