The Assembly Ground is conveniently located on the 1st floor of The Cathay, on the right side when you enter through the main entrance. It’s a decent place to hang out if you’re killing time while waiting for your movie (Cathay Cineplexes is here too!) to start.
The cafe is decently-sized, with the majority of seats being wooden chairs, although there are a few sofa seats near the entrance of the cafe. I found the lighting to be rather bad though, as some spots were quite dim, while others were brightly lit.
We were seated almost immediately, and presented with the menus. Customers are required to place their orders at the cashier, and make payment at the same time (no service charge though, so yay!).
Our food took quite a while to be served, although the hot matcha latte (S$6.50+) that I ordered came within 5 minutes. In my opinion, this was one of the best hot matcha lattes that I have had in Singapore thus far! The matcha flavour was sufficiently strong, and it was sweet, yet with a slightly bitter aftertaste. My only complaint was that it was lukewarm when served, which made me wonder if they had prepared it a while ago, even before I ordered.
A strong and fragrant aroma wafted past us as the waitress brought the next dish to our table. The porcini cream pasta (S$18+) was pretty tasty, with the truffle oil that was infused with the mushrooms and the pasta. The pasta sauce was really thick and creamy, and it did get a bit ‘heavy’ and ‘jelat’ nearing the end according to C. Having eaten a few mouthfulls, I could understand what she meant, and I would suggest that this dish be shared rather than tackled alone.
I had The Assembly Brunch (S$19.50+), which was their take on a big breakfast. It came plated really nicely on a wooden block, but unfortunately the colours did not turn out nicely due to the poor lighting (ok, maybe I’m not the most skilled photographer either haha). I chose the smoked salmon over the bacon, and did not regret that choice at all, as the smoked salmon was pretty good. Too bad only 3 thin strips were given. 😦 The mushrooms and scrambled eggs were fragrant and tasty too! I liked their scrambled eggs as they were sufficiently runny and creamy, suiting my taste yum yum! The bread was quite dry in my opinion, and I did not really like the sausage either, as I felt that it was of a similar quality to frozen food (not what I would expect for the price). The potato gratin was ok, and not exceptional. My brother makes a way better one. 😉
The Assembly Ground is worth a visit for their hot matcha latte if for nothing else. The food here, or at least the two dishes that we tried, was not hugely impressive, although the porcini cream pasta was not too bad. Too many misses for their take on big breakfast for me to truthfully say that I would have it again, although I did like the mushrooms and scrambled eggs. There is an option to add on those as side dishes though, so if I come back, I would probably do that!
