C & I had a ‘fine dining’ date a couple of weeks back at Argo restaurant. Just a short 10-15min walk away from Bugis MRT, the restaurant is located on the same street as Saveur (Purvis Street).
The restaurant is actually owned by the small boutique hotel, Adonis Hotel, and it isn’t so much of a restaurant as it is a small eating area next to the reception counter. Pretty interesting to see tourists turning up as we ate, and checking in right beside us haha. We also saw a middle-aged local man checking in with a woman.. :p I’ll leave it as that for your imagination.
The decor is quite pretty though, and although not glitzy and fancy, it was understated in a nice, charming way. There’s a cute corner just off the reception, with snacks for guests of the hotel. Pretty cute!
As you can see from the pictures, there aren’t that many seats, so it was pretty cosy.
They serve standard Western fare, and their menu is rather cutely designed too!
We had gotten a Groupon for this visit actually (yes, I’m very buay paiseh about it :p), and did not order any ala carte options, but we saw the food the couple next to us had, and it looked pretty appetising as well.
Here’s C with her glass of white wine & the starter (pumpkin soup). The soup was so-so, although the bread was surprisingly tasty; with a soft white centre, and a slightly crumbly crust.
And here’s me with mine. We both came after work, hence our more formal office attire. :p I look tired hahaha.
There was an appetizer of Gravlax with Hövmaster sauce (essentially salmon sashimi with dill), which I obviously enjoyed (psst, I’m a salmon fan!), but C gave most of hers to me. :p
There were 2 options for the main course; either a laksa prawn pasta or roasted chicken fillet.
The laksa prawn pasta was pretty good, as the laksa sauce saved the rather disappointing penne pasta. The penne pasta was not done al dente, and was something to forget quickly in my opinion. The laksa sauce though, was really good, and thankfully it masked the horrible pasta. :p The seafood was decent, not very fresh, but acceptable.
The roasted chicken was pretty tasty though, with the skin grilled close to a crisp, and just crunching delightfully when we bit into it. The chicken meat was tender as well, and paired excellently with the sambal sauce. The pilaf rice was ok, though nothing exceptional.
Dessert was served at the end of this 3-course meal, and was a BOH tea panna cotta. The fruits used were not exactly fresh & sweet, but the panna cotta was infused nicely with the tea, and was smooth and tasty.
The food at Argo is pretty decent, and if you don’t mind people-watching during your meal, then this is the restaurant for you! Hahaha, we saw quite a few tourists checking in, and the odd couple. 😉 An interesting concept having the restaurant located within the hotel ‘lobby’ right next to the reception, but it was fun to have dinner there and people-watch.
