Brother Bird is a small café situated along Bali Lane, in the same stretch as Stateland Café, both of which are operated by the same folks. C and I visited Brother Bird one weekend afternoon, as we happened to be in the vicinity of Bugis.
The shopfront is pretty nondescript, and if you are not looking out for it, you might very well walk past it without knowing that you had missed it.
The interior is pretty spartan as well, and it was pretty crowded when both of us got there. There were probably about 20-30 seats at max, which means that all it would take are a few big groups to fill the place up. There are another 10 seats or so outside the cafe though, so if you do not mind the heat (in the day), you could sit there as well haha.
Ice cream desserts menu
Moving on to the food; we tried the cookie butter soft serve (S$6) and the matcha classic soft serve (S$6).
Matcha soft serve (left) & Cookie butter soft serve (right) – sunglasses not included
The matcha soft serve had a pretty decent matcha flavor, although it was not as strong as I would have liked. The azuki beans here were smooth and provided a yummy companion to the matcha soft serve.
The cookie butter soft serve was really sweet, and if you do not have a really sweet tooth, you might have trouble finishing it on your own haha. The speculoos flavor was quite strong (yummy caramelized biscuits, I like). The almond crunch and sea salt did help a bit in balancing out the flavors, and I always like something sweet yet a bit salty (call me weird). :p
Iced matcha tea
We also ordered an iced matcha tea (S$5.90) to share, although it was more of a ‘mistake’ order as C had thought it was matcha latte hahaha. It was a pretty dilute matcha tea, although it was still refreshing on a hot day, as we had just walked over from Bugis Junction under the hot sun.
Our first impression of the soft serve was that it looked like very little, although it was pretty to look at. Upon starting to eat though, we realised that the serving was quite substantial, at least for us. However, we managed to finish both cups and the drink in the end. :p The soft serve is tasty undoubtedly, although it does melt rather quickly, so if you are ordering other dishes, do get them to serve the soft serve last. We saw a couple at the next table with their waffle swimming in melted soft serve, which I thought was quite sad haha.
