Bingsus are similar to ice kachangs, with both being shaved ice desserts. The similarities end there though, with bingsu being the ‘atas’ cousin to the ‘poorer’ ice kachang. A bowl of ice kachang sets you back around S$2.50, whereas a bowl of bingsu could easily make you S$15-20 poorer. I do fancy mango ice kachang occasionally, but this time, C and I decided to try out O’Ma Spoon’s bingsu to see what the hype was all about.
The last time I tried bingsu was close to 3 or 4 years ago in Korea, so I could not remember if the quality was better in Korea than in Singapore haha. We had heard good things about O’Ma Spoon though, and thus made our way down to Marina Square one hazy afternoon to try their signature bingsu.
The cafe can be found next to the food gallery at Marina Square, on the 4th floor.
We were the only customers when we visited, so it was quiet and relaxing! 🙂 The menu is pretty extensive, and they serve espresso-based drinks as well as teas.
You order and make payment at the counter, and take a seat while they prepare your dessert. They will bring the dessert to your table directly, so there is no need to glance anxiously over at the counter to see if it is ready. :p
They offer takeaway bingsu too, but I have no idea why anyone would wanna takeaway bingsu, since it would melt before you can say “geronimo!”. Ok I kid. :p You would have to agree though, that taking away bingsu isn’t the best idea..
And our mango cheesecake bingsu (S$18.90) has arrived! The mangoes were really sweet (yum!), but the New York cheesecake was average. The shaved ice was really smooth and reminded me of the awesome mango shaved ice I had in Ximending, Taipei.
If you ask me, I would probably not come here for bingsu regularly, lest I burn a hole in my pocket. The bingsu is pretty delicious, but for this price I’d rather be eating 2x matcha lava cake or having a proper main. That said, it is worth a try, especially if you haven’t tried bingsu before. The cheap yet good mango ice kachang is calling out to me now~
