Initially our plan was to try the desserts at Comestival Desserts, but we found it closed when we arrived. 😦 Upon checking their fb page, we realised that they only posted the status an hour ago (which was when we left for Siglap Centre).. Soooo irritated grrrr. What’s lamer is that under their fb page, they are still shown as ‘open’.. Plus we went on a Wednesday, and so it was supposed to be open (they’re only closed on Mondays & Tuesdays). Well, hopefully other cafes don’t post such last minute statuses, but give at least a day’s advance notice to customers.. Okay I’m done with my mini-rant haha, on to Craftsmen!
Craftsmen Specialty Coffee is located in Siglap V, which is right across the road from Siglap Centre. Thankfully it was open, so we didn’t make a wasted trip to Siglap. :p There are a few buses that you can take to get there (Buses 10, 12, 13, 14 or 16), and these stop at a bus stop located a short walk away. The nearest MRT stations (by distance) are Bedok and Kembangan, but even then, it is quite a long walk from there (and not a fun walk either under hot sun)!
They serve not only serve coffee, tea, cakes, and desserts, but they also serve a number of mains and a selection of pastries as well. For this visit, we didn’t get any mains, but ordered coffee and shared a cake instead.
It’s free seating, so go ahead and grab your own seats! Ordering is done at the counter, where you will be required to pay in full. They will deliver the orders to your seat once they’re ready so just kick back and relax!
Check out their offerings on the flat screen TV that’s hanging over the counter. Or grab a hard copy menu and slowly decide what to order while seated down. What’s great is that the cafe doesn’t charge for GST & service charge! Yay! 🙂
I really liked the floor-to-ceiling windows, as they let in a lot of natural light. However, I felt that the interior lighting was pretty bad and somehow made the place feel darker. The pic above is an unedited shot btw. Anyway, the cafe was pretty crowded when we popped by around 1.30pm, but got quieter around 3-4pm. I guess once the lunch crowd left, it’s a pretty relaxed place to hang out at.
They have cute containers of natural unrefined cane sugar for you to add to your coffee (if you like it sweeter)! Featuring C’s elbow in this pic hahaha.
Being the alcoholic that she is (:x I kid btw), C ordered an iced baileys latte (S$8). I tried a few sips and found it ok, but nothing spectacular. Give me an iced baileys with ice cream/gelato any day!
I got a roasted almond latte (S$6) for myself. What’s interesting is that instead of serving the hot latte alone (as most cafes here do), or with a biscotti/biscuit (some cafes), they serve it with chocolate! I’m not sure if this is for all their hot drinks but yum I say! 😀 Anyway, careless me dropped the entire chocolate into my drink as I attempted to dip it in oops. Well it was tasty though! :p I really liked the nutty almond notes at the end of every sip! Oh yes, the coffee was also not too acidic, which is how I like it!
The S’mores cake (S$8.90) we tried was really really good! The chocolatey taste was just right and not too overpowering. C was initially hesitant about getting this cake as she thought it looked too chocolatey, but she liked it after trying it! The slightly gooey marshmallow on top and between the chocolate layers was great too, and complemented the chocolate cake very well. 🙂 Yum yum heh.
Nice chill-out spot in the East, and I do like the interior decor of the place, and the overall spaciousness of the cafe. The drinks are good too, and I would think that their other cakes are as tasty as the one we tried. Didn’t get to try their waffles and mains, but will be back to try it someday! The staff are also very friendly, and they will make the effort to greet you as you enter and leave. 🙂 Although the one negative for me was the interior lighting, which somehow made it difficult to read with all the shadows and glare (they do have floor-to-ceiling windows that already let in a lot of light, so maybe I should have sat nearer the entrance instead of inside haha). They also have another outlet at Eastwood Centre (also located in the East, near to Bedok Camp)!
