I realised that I’ve been checking out cafes all over the island, yet failed to visit one that is near my place. Thus, one hot, weekday afternoon, I dragged C along to a cafe in Bedok. For those who’ve heard of Bedok 85 (it’s this hawker centre that has great zichar, hokkien mee, and so on), To-gather is just a stone’s throw away from it! The nearest MRTs are Bedok and Tanah Merah, but it’ll take you around 15-20min of walking to get there. Alternatively, you can take a bus, with the nearest bus stop being the one right in front of Bedok 85. Buses that currently stop there are 14, 14e, 222, and 545.
To-gather cafe is under a block of flats, and is next to a small convenience store and a bird shop! Yes, you read that right, a bird shop! Ever wanted a parrot to play with? Well, you could get one at that bird shop! :p
There is an outdoor seating area if you’d like to enjoy the birds chirping nearby, and people-watch. 🙂 The area is covered by an awning, and I noticed a standing cooling unit as well, so I guess customers do not need to worry about sweating it out even on a hot day!
If you’re the type that prefers sitting in an air-conditioned area, where there is less chance of being bitten by mosquitoes and harassed by flies.. Then head on in!
The cafe occupies quite a large space, and the pic above is what you see once you step in through their doors. The counter is located in this area as well (out of pic), and you have to order and make payment there. What’s great is that they don’t charge GST and service charge! 🙂
More seating as you walk further into the cafe.
There is a water cooler dispensing ice-cold water, and it’s self-service, so go ahead and help yourselves to it! 🙂 Cups and utensils are placed next to the water cooler. As you can tell from the pics, it’s quite crowded even on a weekday afternoon, as many school kids patronize this cafe, as it serves good food and is not too expensive!
They have a special lunch set for students, which probably explains the percentage of customers we saw that were students! :p
The decor is nice and homely, and I really like the overall feel of the place. 🙂
First up was the iced chocolate! 🙂 It looks really pretty doesn’t it? And it’s quite rare that it came with a chocolate sauce decoration on the foam! Most cafes just serve the iced drinks (iced latte, chocolate, etc) without any ‘art’ on top.. 😦 Anyway, the iced chocolate tasted good, and I really liked that there was sufficient chocolatey flavor in it. Some iced chocolates are really dilute, even if you drink it before all the ice melts. This one was just nice after some of the ice melted!
C’s Italian herb-crusted fish and chips (S$8.90). The fish was nicely breaded (not overly-floury), and there was just enough fishy taste (not overpowering). The fish was tasty as well, and paired well with the sauce and the side salad. The fries were pretty decent too, although slightly too salty.
My grilled hamburger steak (S$11.90)! The hamburger steak patty was thick and juicy, and super yummy! It’s definitely much better than Pepper Lunch’s hamburger steak! I didn’t really like the sausages, as I felt that they were rather tasteless, but C seemed to like it. :p Oh the egg was nicely done too, and the white was bouncy and the yolk gooey (just the way I like it! ;)) The wedges are full of flavor, and I couldn’t have enough of them. The salad was the same one served with their other mains, and was good as well!
We capped off a good lunch by sharing a matcha lava cake with vanilla gelato (S$6.90). The matcha was full-bodied and quite flowy (yay!), and went deliciously-well with the vanilla gelato. 🙂
We tried some new things on our second visit, although we had the matcha lava cake again! :p
The spaghetti carbonara (S$7.90) was really average IMO, and felt kinda like those microwave spaghettis lol. It’s really not worth the money spent. Get the fish and chips or hamburger steak instead!
We tried the ice choc the last time, so decided to go for the hot choc (S$3.80) this time. It was even better, with a strong chocolatey taste! And for this price, it’s ohsodamnworthit! 😀
I would definitely come back to this great cafe! Firstly, it’s soooo convenient (at least for me :p). Secondly, they serve great food at very reasonable prices (there’s no gst or service charge, so the prices you see on the menu are what you pay). And lastly, I really like the decor of the place. 🙂 Well it can get a bit noisy with all the school kids, but still it’s a good place to bring your date for some fun, laughter, and good food. Not if you wanna be romantic though! :p They do take reservations, so be sure to call in advance to avoid disappointment/waiting!
