I visited GRUB with C a few weeks back on a Sunday afternoon. C had just finished teaching her yoga class at the Botanic Gardens, and we thought why don’t we head to GRUB for a meal. We had been wanting to go there for quite a long time, but we were always too lazy to go. :p
GRUB is located within Bishan Park, and the nearest MRT stations are Bishan and Ang Mo Kio. We gave the restaurant a call before heading down, and found out from them that we should come via Ang Mo Kio instead, as the roads that day from Bishan were jamming up. So, do give them a call to ask for directions if you’re unsure. 🙂 Oh, do note that GRUB doesn’t take phone reservations, and you have to be physically present for them to put you on their waitlist!
Unfortunately, or fortunately, it was raining when we reached Bishan Park. Luckily, the rain wasn’t too heavy and we had an umbrella with us. Usually it gets quite crowded on a Sunday afternoon, but thanks to the rain, most people decided to head elsewhere instead! Which was great haha, and we were ushered to a bar seat upon arrival. Later on, when tables were freed up, we were moved to a table for 2 without any fuss. 🙂
There is both indoor and outdoor seating at GRUB, and we would have preferred sitting outdoors, but there were no outdoor seats available, so we made do. It was also rather cold indoors that day, probably because of the rainy weather.
The overall ambience felt great, and we liked the brick walls and high ceilings, which made the place look big and spacious.
Chilli crab baked eggs (S$10++) was an interesting appetiser, and I could really taste the chilli crab flavor in it. Haha the bread also went rather well with the baked eggs. Not the cheapest appetiser, but one that is worth a try! Especially if you are a fan of eggs and chilli crab! 🙂
The GRUB Cheeseburger (S$13++) is served with fries, and I really liked the juicy burger patty. The burger bun was also great, as it is the kind of bun that is soft yet has a lightly-toasted taste. I don’t know if my description does it justice, but yea I really liked their burger bun too hahaha.
C’s Crispy Fish Burger (S$14++) had this huge fried fish patty, which was deliciously done. It was not too oily, and the fish crumbled just nicely as we cut into it mmm. We also liked that the batter was just nice, and that it did not completely overwhelm the fish. Sometimes when I eat fried fish, I think I’m eating more fried batter than actual fish.. But this was not the case here, so kudos to them! Oh, we also added a mentaiko mayo dip for S$2++. We initially wanted to order their mentaiko fries, but seeing as their burgers came with fries, that would have been fries overload. :p The mentaiko mayo dip is actually similar to what you will get with the mentaiko fries, except that the mentaiko fries would also come with seaweed. So not a big loss, and we really loved the mentaiko mayo dip hahaha. Not a drop was left!
Being located in a park, GRUB is perfect for active people looking for a good meal after walking/jogging/yoga-ing at Bishan Park. Although it is not the most convenient restaurant to get to, at least there are buses that drop you off nearby, saving you a long walk through the park (if you are lazy/it is raining/you just don’t wanna walk). Having both indoor and outdoor seating is great, as there are times when I’d like to sit inside and stay cool, while there are times when I’d like to admire nature as I have my food. The service is prompt, the staff are courteous, and the food is good. Would have loved to try their drinks and desserts, but probably another time, as we had coffee and cupcakes before this (oops) and were too full.
